On Tuesday 27th October Judy will join The Masque Collective to sing the dramatic and rarely-performed Six Celan Songs of Michael Nyman. The dark, vivid poetry of Paul Celan, a Romanian Jew whose life and poetry is inextricably linked with his experience of the holocaust and its aftermath, is set by Nyman for low female voice, and was originally written for Ute Lemper. Composed twenty years after the poet drowned himself in the Seine, evocative, intricate, ingenious and affecting texts set in huge orchestral swells, driving ostinati and shimmering textures make for a very special work, which demands an extraordinary range from the vocalist both vocally, and emotionally; depths and heights in every sense.

The concert in Milton Court is part of the Barbican’s Contemporary Music series, and will also feature Grace Davidson singing Christian Forshaw’s new piece Songs of Solace, a musical response to mother’s account of losing her daughter in the London 7/7 bombings.
